Health Care Personnel Shortage

Washington state is facing a growing public health crisis because of a shortage of health care workers.

The general public appears unaware of this critical situation, even though it has the potential to devastate access to quality health care throughout the state.

While health care is often described as a product, health services are fundamentally people caring for other people.

The people of Washington must take action now to address this problem. If we do not, there may be no one to care for us at the moment we and our families need help most.

Although solutions exist that can resolve this crisis, they are dependent on leadership at multiple levels. The involvement of political leadership at the federal and state level is mandatory to promote public policy solutions.

The following indicators illustrate the personnel crisis facing health care in Washington state. The theme running across each of the indicators is that a lack of health care workers is causing major health care delivery problems throughout the state.

Between 1980 and 2000, Washington state’s population grew by 42 percent.40 The population is projected to grow another 27 percent by 2020. While the increase in Washington state’s total population will be significant, the projected increase in the elderly portion of its population is staggering.

A faltering health care sector has implications beyond patient care. Eventually, it will impact state and local economies. National studies of business relocation decisions have found that the quality of the health care system is a major factor businesses consider when studying relocation options.

Several organizations are addressing the shortage. We have compiled a library of publications containing statistics and solutions.
