Feature: What Hospital Boards Can Do To Ease Worker Shortage
  1. Appoint a non-physician clinician from the community to the hospital board.
  2. Ask the public relations department to frequently contact the media to tell stories about inspiring workers.
  3. Take steps to maximize worker efficiency — use computers to reduce paperwork; free up skilled workers by hiring aides to do simple, routine tasks.
  4. Promote your hospital’s reputation as a good environment for new workers. Establish an affiliation with a local college to serve as a clinical training site. Implement a strong mentoring program for new workers.
  5. Avoid worker burnout by taking steps to ensure that hospital staffing is adequate.
