Many hospitals are already taking important steps to combat
the shortage. Hospital boards and leadership across the state
consider the health personnel shortage a serious issue, and
are identifying solutions in their strategic plans. Many of
the solutions hospitals can work towards are in partnership
with educational institutions: scholarships, increasing faculty,
and attracting young people to health careers.
Other hospital-based strategies include increasing recruitment
in their communities, implementing new retention strategies,
such as flexible compensation packages and harnessing the
power of technology. Unfortunately, some hospitals are struggling
so much with finances and the immediate problem of filling
vacancies, they are unable to direct resources to long-term
solutions. In order to engage in creative approaches, hospitals
would benefit greatly from financial help to cope with the
shortage.
